Heritage Rhythms Dance Class

This class is taught by seasoned dance professionals Toni Hall and Ivy Burch.

Prepare to travel the African Diaspora in this energetic and culturally rich dance exploration. Let the rhythms of the drums and movements of the Motherland uplift your soul and jump-start your body.

The 90-minute class incorporates deep breathing, conditioning, and cardio intensive movements from various dance styles. Men and women of all levels are welcome. Childcare not provided. Space is limited. All are welcome to join us at Hayti! $5 per class. Guest instructors and master classes are programmed throughout the year for participants.

Fall Sessions begin September 14, 2013

African Movement

Saturday (11am – 12pm) Ages 5 – 7 years
This introductory class for our younger dancers and singers will introduce rhythm, songs, movement games, and dance from the “Motherland”. Our young dance programs provide a positive beginning to the world of dance and movement. The instructor is Toni K Hall; a gifted dancer and teacher. Toni is a founding member of the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble and an Artistic Director of Collage Dance Company. You her dancers(under 5) must receive permission from the instructor.

African/Jazz I

Saturday (12pm – 1pm) Ages 7 – 10 years
This class seeks to expose our young dancers to dance vocabulary that will serve them in jazz, modern or African dance classes. The dancers will experience a variety of dance styles throughout improvisation, dance exploration and choreography. Dancers will progressively build on their skills to master African and Jazz choreography. The instructors are *Heather Lee and Sadiyah Shakur-Saleem

Drum Class

Saturday (12pm – 1pm)
This class addition taught by Telli Shabu will introduce basic drum techniques and rhythm patterns from the Diaspora to aspiring and beginner drummers.

African/Jazz II

Saturday (1pm – 2:30pm) Ages 11 – teens
African/Jazz II seeks to continue to diversify our dancers. They will learn dance vocabulary (turns, jumps, etc.) and be encouraged to stretch their bodies and their dance abilities. The dancers will learn African dances that are inspired by West African rhythms. We usually have live drums for this class. The class is energetic and challenging. Instructors for the class are Sadiyah Shakur-Saleem and Toni K. Hall.
Class designation is based on age, as well as prior dance experience.
