The Hayti Heritage Center in Durham, North Carolina, is proud to announce a special screening event on Thursday, September 21st, 2023, at 7:00 PM, honoring the legacy of the late jazz saxophonist Sam King. This heartfelt event, titled “Remembering Sam: Supporting a Jazz Giant’s Legacy,” will take place at the historic Hayti Heritage Center, located at 804 Old Fayetteville St., Durham, NC.
Sam King, a brilliant and distinctive saxophonist, left an indelible mark on the jazz community and touched the lives of many. His untimely passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him and appreciated his remarkable talent. To celebrate Sam’s life and support his family, the Hayti Heritage Center will offer the first in-person screening of the documentary film Sam King Trio at Kingfisher.
Filmed amidst the height of the pandemic in 2020, this introspective work sheds light on the travails of musicians, particularly jazz artists, during the shutdown. It captures the essence of a poignant moment in time, showcasing Sam King’s exceptional alto saxophone skills alongside fellow musicians Dwyane Jordan on drums and Chris Mills on bass. The documentary offers an intimate look at the artistry and creativity of Sam King, providing a lasting testament to the upbringing and influences that birthed a singular sound.
“I implore you to watch the film that I had the privilege of being a part of and to donate directly to Sam’s family as they endeavor to raise the funds needed for Sam’s homegoing,” says King Kenney, the producer of the film and a passionate advocate for jazz musicians. “Sam’s mother, Katherine Leonard, has shared that the funds are needed by September 22nd, and I’ve assured her that the jazz and NCCU communities will find a way to ensure that every effort is made to support a member of our extended family.”
Tickets for the screening event will be available at a suggested donation price of $10. All proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to Katherine Leonard to help cover the expenses associated with Sam King’s burial.
The event promises to be a poignant evening filled with the beautiful sounds of jazz, memories of Sam King’s unparalleled talent, and a sense of unity as Durham loses another jazz progeny. Equally, it’s a call to action for a closely-knit community to come together to honor the life and legacy of an “extended family member” during a time of need.
Join us on this special evening as we remember Sam King, celebrate his remarkable contributions to jazz, and extend our support to his family in their time of need.
