God’s Trombones

Experience a performance of God’s Trombones, a multimedia work featuring songs, sermons, and the art of Aaron Douglas. This production by OnQ Productions (Charlotte, NC) uses the text of James Weldon Johnson’s 1927 work God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse, digital projections of Aaron Douglas’s original illustrations for the Johnson work (currently on view at the Ackland), and a variety of gospel songs and spirituals arranged by Billboard History Maker, Dennis Reed Jr of Dennis Reed & GAP.

Two ticketed performances will be held at the Hayti Heritage Center, a cultural arts and arts education venue housed in the historic St. Joseph’s AME Church in Durham.

Hayti Film Next Level – February 2022 Films

From the political to the personal, the Hayti Film Next Level series presents two films that push the boundaries of human expression.

1969. Marighella, Brazil’s number one enemy, has no time for fear. On the one hand, a violent military dictatorship, with its heinous crimes of torture and infamous censorship. On the other, an intimidated people. Alongside guerrilleros 30 years younger than him and willing to fight, the revolutionary leader opts for action – all the while trying to keep the promise of reuniting with his son, who he distanced himself from in order to protect.

Directed by Wagner Moura.

**In Portuguese with English subtitles.

Thee Debauchery Ball is the story of Chicago’s Afro-Futuristic, BDSM, fetish-themed House music party and how it has reshaped the Black social scene and challenged the narratives of Black sexuality.

Directed by David Weathersby

This month’s screenings are available online only.

A Love Supreme: A Tribute To John Coltrane

Every other month, DJRF & Hayti pay tribute to the masters of Jazz and the legacy they left behind. Part of the proceeds will create a jazz scholarship for high school students. It is important to hold a high standard for our music and preserve its power to future generations in our community, as everything still to follow has come from the birth of Black American Music.  Curated by: Dwanye Jordan of Dark Knight Management #BAM #HAYTI

The first event in our new series celebrates the jazz giant, John Coltrane, on his 93rd birthday!

Come and vibe to the sounds of local jazz artists, Shaquim Muldrow #Sax, Brandon Shamar #Piano, Chris Sharp #Bass, and Dwayne Jordan #Drums, as they reinterpret sounds of the North Carolina native who forever changed the landscape of music.
