Hayti Lit Book Club – Every 4th Thursday

This New Series Explores classic literature that reflects the Black Experience in America. In our first year, we start with Classics in the American Canon. Every 4th Thursday of the month, we will discuss the themes that occur in each classic , supported by facilitators and highlighted with discussions, readings, and performances from each work.

May 20th, 2023 – Jambalaya Soul Slam – Grand Slam Finals

This is a SAFE & SOCIALLY DISTANCED poetry event! Come experience an intimate and eloquent poetic experience.

Join us for some of the most amazing poetry you will hear. Come see these wordsmiths bring stories to life on stage. The best poets in the area will compete for cash prizes. This will be an wonderful event full of dynamic poetry performances.

$$$$ prizes!

All poetry shared must be original. Poets of all ages are welcome.

Poems can be memorized or read (paper or phone).

The Hayti Heritage Center presents Jambalaya Soul Slam’s annual Erotic Poetry Slam, filmed by Durham’s own G Yamazawa.

Watch Southern wordsmiths arouse an intimate audience and compete for the honor of Oshun and Hedone (as well as a cash prize). 4PlayNC dancer Jazzlyn Hill embellishes the verses and offers an educational demonstration in flogging and how to experiment safely with sadomasochism. Sitting in the upper pews of St. Joseph’s, painter Tyamica Mabry gives form to the poets’ dripping scenes.

The Chitlin’ Circuit was an informal network of venues through the south from the 1930’s-1960’s that hosted entertainers From Nat King Cole to James Brown. This one night only Live Performance will pay tribute to the hotels, restaurants and clubs in Black Business districts that become “Oasis Spaces” for African Americans.

 

Featuring Live Jazz & Soul Music led by Dwayne Jordan

Narrated by Darrell Stover & Hosted by Dasan Ahanu

An OUTDOOR & SOCIALLY DISTANCED poetry experience!

We have the best poets of the 19-20 slam season returning for chance to make the 2020 Bull City Slam Team. The top 4 poets will earn a spot on the team, have a chance to work together on new works, and represent the Triangle in national competition in April 2021.

The competing poets are Lee, Luna, K Lambitty, Ayanna Albertson, Hausson Byrd, Raven, LB, and Ashley Lumpkin.

*** This slam will be outside in the courtyard***

***Seating will be socially distanced and attendance is limited***

***You must RSVP to reserve your spot***

***Masks are required for this event***

***Hand sanitizing stations will be available.***
